“It is a moral and ethical duty for all pro sports franchises to develop their athletes as people, to help them transition to life after, and to set them up for success along the way.”
Hayley Wickenheiser, retired professional hockey player
The need
Throughout almost all professional sports it is widely acknowledged that sportspeople require support when they retire to minimise emotional trauma and lead a fulfilling life and career beyond competition.
Organisations and programmes exist worldwide to support athletes and dancers in their career transitions, however, aside from Beyond Motorsport, there is currently no large-scale specific, tailored support for motor racers and team personnel to access in the UK or abroad.
Anecdotal evidence (there is yet to be a formal study on motor racers specifically) suggests that motor racers are highly vulnerable to emotional trauma in their retirement which can result in substance abuse, severe mental health challenges such as depression, and loss of income.
It doesn’t have to be this way. A tailored programme of support available to motor racers would reduce the likelihood and severity of this trauma by preparing them for their transition, supporting them through the challenges it brings and ultimately fulfilling their potential in life beyond competition.
Not only would this benefit the individual, who may then have better overall health, economic prospects and relationships, but also wider society who can benefit from the contributions that these exceptional sportspeople have to offer beyond their racing career. Everyone wins.
